History of West Point

In the late 1800's and early 1900's, West Point, Maine was a fishing village reached primarily by boat. Herman Smith blew in on a gale on his small sloop to find a safe harbor. He threw anchor, met Inez Gillam, an ancestor of the current seller, and put down roots. He built a new house for his bride, and raised 12 children there. Herman also built many of the other original houses in West Point and the General Store where he sold goods brought down to the Village by horse drawn wagons. The General Store remained a mainstay for more than 100 years. Now, the General Store, include in this sale, has been completely rebuilt as a store and waterfront restaurant with an upper deck and unparalleled views.

Fishing life is arduous, with long hours at sea, and many long hours keeping boats and gear in good condition. The old tradition of weekend community gatherings flourished in the Village and Herman Smith built the Sou'Wester with its outside decks for dancing beside the sea for social gatherings musical evenings. Soon word spread to the summer visitors who came by steamer for the Saturday night dances and many weddings and special occasions were celebrated at the Sou'Wester over the years. With magnificent views of the open ocean, the Sou'Wester is one of the Maine coast's most spectacular and impressive private homes for sale.

Today, the Village retains its historic charm and affords the opportunities to enjoy privacy, participate in many recreational activities, purchase fresh lobsters at the fishing wharf, access two sandy town private beaches, and the nearby Sebasco Resort golf and tennis facilities.
